Two die in York collision

PoliceA serious collision occurred near Gate Helmsley, York, this afternoon Friday 5 April 2013.

Sadly, two people died at the scene of the collision. They were a man and a woman, both in their 80s from the York area.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision which occurred at around 1.20pm on Northgate Lane, Gate Helmsley. It involved a white Citroen Zsara in which the couple were travelling and a green Land Rover Defender and trailer travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the Land Rover, a man in his twenties, also from the York area, was treated for minor injuries at the scene of the collision.

Anyone who saw either of the vehicles prior to the collision, whether on Northgate Lane or in the surrounding area is asked to contact the police as soon as possible, along with anyone who witnessed the collision.

Traffic Constable Martin Smith of Tadcaster Roads Policing Group, said:

This is a tragic incident in which an elderly couple have sadly lost their lives. Our thoughts are with their family and friends at this time. It is vital that we find out exactly what led to the collision and to assist our investigation, I am appealing for anyone who saw the white Citroen or green Land Rover and trailer this afternoon, either during or prior to the collision, to please contact us without delay.

The road remains closed while collision investigators examine the scene and the vehicles are recovered.
