The Square serves up more than food on the menu

28 March 2013

The-SquareThe Square Bar & Restaurant in Harrogate have a lot on their plate lately with both the launch of their cookery classes and their ‘Design a Dish’ competition – donating the proceeds from both to local charity Help the Lions.

Led by proprietor and head chef Darren Gladman, who together with his wife Debbie opened The Square in November 2012, the cookery classes will include the recreation of dishes already on the menu, together with basic skills, culinary tips and advice.

Classes will be priced at £15 each and will run for 12 months covering everything from sugar art and easy puddings, to bread making and advice on how to match and pair your wine. And with refreshments and a light supper provided at each class, all you need is a pen, notepad and an appetite!

The classes start on Monday 29 April at 6.30pm with an introduction to The Square Bar & Restaurant and the opportunity to watch Darren recreate one of the most popular dishes on the menu, with the winning dish from the ‘Design a Dish’ competition also making an appearance later in the course.

So it’s time to reach for your apron and create something unique for the chance to see your dish on the menu at The Square Bar & Restaurant! And all you need to remember is that the dish must be your own and not ‘borrowed’ from a book.

Darren-Gladman-Harrogate-restaurantClosing date for all entries is Tuesday 30 April 2013.

The winner will also receive a bottle of wine and be invited to sample their creation at The Square before it appears on the specials menu for 2 weeks.

Explaining the motivation behind his idea, Darren said:

We always wanted The Square to be more than just a place to eat and offering cookery classes and the chance to create a dish for our menu, is a great way for us to engage with our customers – and to be able to support such a worthwhile charity at the same time makes it even more special.

All proceeds from the cookery classes plus £1 for every winners dish ordered will be donated to Help the Lions who are working to raise £80,000 for Harrogate District Hospital to purchase a new state-of-the-art laser eye machine. Which means you can learn to cook like a professional, ‘Design a Dish’ for the specials menu and raise funds for a much-needed cause – a bit like having your cake and eating it!
