MPs to debate Yorkshire’s Tour de France bid

12 December 2012

Julian-SmithJulian Smith, Member of Parliament for Skipton and Ripon, is to lead a Parliamentary debate next week on Yorkshire’s bid to host the Tour de France’s Grand Depart.

The MP has been strongly supporting Welcome to Yorkshire’s efforts to bring the race to the County in 2014 and has successfully called for the discussion to show the wide ranging support for the bid.

The debate will take place on Tuesday 18 December between 9.30am and 11am in Westminster Hall.

Julian Smith said:

I believe Yorkshire has an unbeatable case to be the host of the Tour de France’s Grand Depart and I want to show the Tour’s organisers the support the bid has at Westminster.

I met with the organisers when they visited the UK earlier this year and Welcome to Yorkshire have been running an excellent campaign showing why our County is the right choice.

Yorkshire is the spiritual home of cycling with the most spectacular scenery imaginable and some of the most enthusiastic sports fans in the world. It would be worth hundreds of millions to the region’s economy and would showcase our stunning landscape to millions around the world.
