Witness appeal following fatal A19 collision

PoliceNorth Yorkshire Police are appealing for a vital witness to come forward following a fatal road traffic collision near Thirsk.

It occurred at approximately 8.40pm on Monday 17 September 2012, on the southbound carriageway of the A19 close the to junction for the A168 and the York turn off.

The collision involved an 86-year-old local man who was walking along the carriageway and an orange lorry.

The man, who was the pedestrian, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. We are not yet in a position to release his identity.

The driver of the lorry was shaken but otherwise uninjured.

Traffic Constable Steven Wood, of North Yorkshire Police’s Roads Policing Group, said:

I understand that at the time of the collision a car was overtaking the orange lorry. Although they were not involved in the collision it is possible that the driver may have vital information that could help the investigation. I ask them to contact the police as soon as possible.

I would also like to speak to anyone who saw either the man walking along the A19 or the orange lorry prior to the collision and ask that they contact the police as soon as possible.
