29 June 2012

PolicePolice are appealing for vital witnesses to come forward after an elderly man has died, four-and-a-half months after falling from his mobility scooter.

At around 12.25 on the afternoon of Thursday 9 February 2012, 87-year-old Ripon man, Roderick Sawford, who is also known locally as Ray, was riding his mobility scooter along Highfield Road in the town. As he was turning left into Lead Lane, he fell from the scooter.

Following the collision, Mr Sawford was taken to hospital with face and head injuries and was released after treatment. However, he was readmitted to Harrogate District Hospital on 19 March, where he sadly died on Saturday 23 June as a result of the injuries he sustained in the collision.

Police want to trace two men in a black vehicle who stopped at the scene and came to Mr Sawford’s assistance prior to the arrival of the ambulance service.

They would also like to speak to anyone who saw the collision or saw a mobility scooter being ridden along Highfield Road prior to the incident, to contact them.

Anyone who has any information, including the two men in the black vehicle, is asked to call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2 and ask for Sergeant Hamish Halloway.
