Floodwater vehicle rescues in the Hawes area

Fire ServiceNorth Yorkshire Fire and Rescue were called to the  A684, Hawes at 21:16 hours on 22 June 2012.

Appliances from Hawes and Leyburn, together with swift water rescue teams from Richmond and Ripon, together with a trained officer, were sent to the report of a car containing persons trapped in approximately 45cm of flowing floodwater on the A684.

On arrival The fire crews from Hawes effected the rescue of a family of two adults and two children, by pushing their car from the floodwater. Unfortuneatly, during this operation a further two cars also tried to negotiate the floodwater and also had to be rescued in a similar manner.

In total, three cars containing five adults and four children were pushed to safety by the Hawes fire crew who donned wetsuits and lifejackets during the rescue. All other fire and rescue resources were not required.

Fire crews returned to the same area in the early hours of 23 June 2012 at 00:57.

Appliances from Hawes and Leyburn, together with swift water rescue teams from Richmond and Ripon, together with trained officers, a total of 23 fire & rescue personnel, were sent to a report of a car containing one male trapped in floodwater on the A684, Bainbridge.

On arrival The fire crews from Hawes and Leyburn effected the rescue of one male, unharmed, by pushing the car from the floodwater.

The Hawes and Leyburn fire crews donned drysuits and lifejackets during the rescue. All other fire and rescue resources were not required and returned.
