“Bienvenue á Yorkshire”: local MP backs Le Bid

17 May 2012

Andrew Jones MPHarrogate & Knaresborough MP Andrew Jones has thrown his weight behind the campaign to bring a leg of the Tour de France to Yorkshire in 2016.  The campaign – known as ‘Le Bid’ – is being spearheaded by Welcome to Yorkshire.

Mr Jones has written personally to Gary Verity – Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire – highlighting his support and has signed the online petition at www.yorkshire.com/back-the-bid calling for the contest to come to Yorkshire.

Mr Jones commented:

I believe Yorkshire can stage an amazing leg of Le Tour.  Our countryside will provide a spectacular backdrop and we have all the infrastructure needed to support the event.

The Tour de France is the world’s best known cycling event and has been an annual fixture since 1903.

Mr Jones continued:

Yorkshire – and particularly Harrogate and Knaresborough – has a strong cycling tradition and I have been pleased to support many local cycling initiatives.  Hosting the Tour de France would continue that tradition and bring investment and jobs to our region.  I urge everyone to Back Le Bid by registering their support online as I have done.
