Make the most of the Hallowe’en pumpkin

People in North Yorkshire are being urged to make the most of their Hallowe’en pumpkins … by using the flesh for food.

The York and North Yorkshire Waste Partnership, together with the Love Food, Hate Waste campaign points out that there are many delicious ways of eating pumpkins.

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s Glutney chutney is perfect for using up apples and pumpkins, and is just one of the recipe suggestions available at this Halloween.

Pumpkins can be used to fill ravioli, to make pumpkin tarts, or paired with spices to make a soup. The roasted seeds make a great snack.

Seasonal apple recipes include baked citrus pears and apples, baked apple crisp, spicy warm fruit salad and simple baked apples.

Once you’ve produced your Halloween delights, the pumpkin skin / lanterns and apple cores can be added to the compost bin, and when Spring arrives your home made compost will be nearly ready to use,” said County Councillor Chris Metcalfe, Executive Member for Waste Management.

Don’t forget that compost bins can accept more than just apple cores and pumpkin seeds. Other fruit and vegetable peelings, tea bags, coffee grounds, grass, paper, cardboard, vegetarian pet bedding and hoover bag contents can all be added to your bin.

To help people get started on composting, the York and North Yorkshire Waste Partnership is working with Even Greener to offer residents low cost compost bins.

A 220 litre Compost Converter is available for just £10 or a 330 litre Compost Converter costs just £13 plus home delivery of just £5.49 per order. There’s even a buy one get one half price offer, making home composting even better value. To buy a bin contact Evengreener on 0844 571 444 or visit and take advantage of these bargain prices while funding lasts.
