Grass roots approach to fitness as former gardener launches urban gym

18 October 2011

A former landscape gardener from Harrogate who turned his passion for fitness into a career is hoping his down to earth approach will encourage more local people to have a go at keeping fit.

Chris MacKay, 29, left his job as a landscape gardener to pursue an ambition to become a fitness instructor and has recently launched his own personal training business, Urban Gym.

Chris said:

I’ve worked with all abilities from bodybuilding enthusiasts and marathon runners to complete beginners at group outdoor fitness sessions where the social element of the training was an integral part of the regime.

When I decided to launch my own business it was with the intention of encouraging people who wouldn’t normally consider one to one training to give it a go.”

Chris, a former Rossett School student, recently became one of five experts based at The White Hart Hotel’s exclusive new training facility The Fitness Rooms, which is reserved for the sole use of the trainers’ clients.

Chris added:

I wanted to develop a no-nonsense, jargon free programme that would appeal to anyone, whatever their level of fitness and I hope it will be achievable and straightforward enough to encourage people to give it a try, no matter how busy their lives.

The fact that The Fitness Rooms is open 24 hours a day and can only be used by us and our clients makes it perfect for training anyone who has a hectic schedule or is self-conscious about exercising in public.
