Harrogate Town 2 – Gainsborough Trinity 1

8 October 2011

Team Manager, Simon Weaver praised his sides magnificent response as they put their F A Cup defeat behind them with a gritty performance against high flying Gainsborough.

The first action saw Steve Turnbull send Peter Bore clear, but his cross shot drifted wide.

With both sides struggling to keep their feet on the greasy, rain soaked surface, mistakes were frequent.

Darryn Stamp almost profited from a weak Richard Pell clearance when he shot just wide, then Zac Jones pulled out a superb save to deny him ,after he had been set up by Leon Mettam.

However, it was Town who began to look more dangerous and Laurie Wilson rattled the visitor’s crossbar from the edge of the area, before Dom Roma cleared Will Turl’s (pictured above) header off the line.

After twenty minutes Town were awarded a free kick, and Turnbull found debutant Alex Meecham, who volleyed past Andy Pettinger from 25 yards to delight the home supporters.

A clever backheel by Bore played in Wilson, who shot narrowly wide, then Turl drove at Pettinger, as Town dominated.

Unfortunately, with two minutes to go before the break, Trinity luckily equalised.Jamie Yates’s speculative shot appeared to pose no danger, but it squirmed from Jones’s grasp and trickled over the line.

Trinity made the early running after the break without seriously threatening the Town goal, but it took a fine run by sub Lee Elam to release the pressure.

Both teams battled for supremacy and Trinity’s Stamp fired over the Town bar from long range and Turl, who was having his best game for Town’ headed wide.

In the 78th minute Town broke the deadlock after the Trinity defence conceded a corner, from which Richard Pell stabbed home from close range.

Trinity made a last ditch effort to get something out of the game and skipper Gavin Cowan hit the Harrogate crossbar from inside the penalty area.

A huge cheer greeted Referee Graeme Fyvie’s final whistle,as the Town faithful welcomed Harrogate’s rise to ninth in the table.
