A BBC TV series tackling the taboos associated with writing wills has been welcomed by one of Harrogate’s leading experts in wills, trusts and probate.
Julie Jewers, head of Berwins Solicitors’ Legal 500 recommended wills trusts and probate team, said the BBC’s Can’t Take It With You series on Friday nights had helped to highlight some of the most common dilemmas facing families making decisions about who should inherit their assets.
Each programme focuses on two families dealing with a dilemma over what to write in their wills with one recent episode focusing on a wife wanting to leave half the home to charity whilst her husband preferred to share it between his two sons from a previous marriage.
Ms Jewers said disagreements over which family members deserved the biggest share of inheritance were common.
“Issues like this often arise when wills are being drawn up and the solicitor has an important role to play in helping the parties
understand the options available to them, and exploring the legal implications of their decisions” she said.
“Solicitors come across all sorts of family dilemmas and the BBC series has helped to show what a relief it can be to discuss those
difficulties with a solicitor and discover how easily and pragmatically it can be dealt with.”
